Cambodia could get new gaming law this year

The government of Cambodia is reportedly working to accelerate the process to bring the new law into effect by the end of 2020 to allow the gaming industry to be better regulated and the government could be paid more national taxes. According to the statistics, until 2019, there were 169 casino licences in Cambodia, 91 of which are located in Sihanoukville. To date, casinos in Cambodia have been closed since April due to the impact of Covid-19.

Sigma News has reported that a draft of the new gaming law was discussed between Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, Aun Pornmoniroth, and the Supreme Advisory Council in the middle of June. The draft includes over 12 chapters and 98 articles to regulate the industry. Once a final version is agreed upon, the project will be presented to the Cambodian cabinet and eventually to the legislative body to review.

If passed, the new gaming law would make the application process for casinos stricter, overseen by a new 11-member committee to regulate gaming. (2020/06/29)
